Being Present (Not Just Buying Presents)

A Sunshine Coast Guide to Slowing Down Together

The holidays on the Sunshine Coast have a way of nudging us back to what actually matters. Yes, the twinkle lights are cute and sure, we all love a good deal on a stand mixer we’ll use twice. But year after year, the memories that stick aren’t the wrapped gifts under the tree… they’re the moments we slowed down enough to actually be with the people we love.

As a lifelong Coast local and someone who spends a lot of time helping families plant roots here, I see it every day: the magic is in the moments, not the merchandise.

So this season, here are a few simple, Coast-approved ways to be more present with your people:

1. Do a “Tech Free Ten” Walk

No phones, no distractions, just the ocean air, the trees and whoever you’re with.
Soames Hill, Davis Bay or your own neighbourhood loop all count. It doesn’t have to be long to feel good.

Bonus: This is the kind of lifestyle buyers dream about when they move here, slow, scenic, intentional.

2. Bake Something Easy and Definitely Imperfect

Pick one recipe everyone can help with, even if it turns into a comedy show.
Burnt edges + laughter = core memory.

3. Write Each Other a Three Line Gratitude Note

Not a big speech, not a Hallmark moment, just three lines.
Short, sweet and surprisingly powerful.

4. Do a “Sunshine Coast Scavenger Hunt”

Think:

  • Find the house with the best Christmas lights
  • Spot three seals (or honestly, one seal making eye contact is enough)
  • Grab hot chocolate at a local café

Families love this because it gets them out exploring the community and creates the kind of connection people want when they move here.

5. Share One Hope for the New Year

At dinner, in the car, while wrapping gifts, wherever.
It doesn’t have to be deep. It just has to be honest.

6. Start One New Tradition, Even If It’s Silly

Matching pjamas?
Christmas Eve beach walk?
A “yes, we can open one gift early” rebellion?
These tiny rituals become the stories your kids tell later.

Presence Builds Community And Community Builds Home

One of my favourite things about working in real estate on the Sunshine Coast is watching people discover that home is more than a property line. It’s the people you share the living room with. The neighbours you wave to. The traditions you build year after year.

Being present with the people you love doesn’t just make for a beautiful holiday, it’s what truly makes this place feel like home.

And if 2026 is the year you’re thinking about making a move, upsizing, downsizing or finding a new space that better fits your family and your lifestyle, I’m always here, no pressure, just a conversation.

Because the best presents aren’t things wrapped in paper…
they’re the places and moments where your real life happens.

Coast life starts with a conversation, whenever you’re ready.
